The Benefits of Scandinavian-Style Interior Design
Many of the items we carry at South Coast Furnishings & Flooring Extra fit with the philosophy of Scandinavian-style interior design. In other words, they combine an understated beauty with being highly functional. This usually equates to clean lines, muted colours, and a lot of wood and other natural materials. There’s a reason why Scandi (or Nordic) style is so popular with designers around the world and the benefits it brings are what we’re going to examine in this blog entry…
Fashionable
Rooms laid out in accordance with the traditional Scandinavian design ethic (simple, elegant, useable) are always in fashion. They tend to be based around wooden furniture like our Malmo Bedroom Collection.
Peaceful/Relaxing
For reasons we’ll go into below, Scandinavian-style interior design has the property of being calming and allowing you to remain at peace. This is helped by the presence of natural materials, including wool rugs and throws. We have some lovely examples of these, such as our selection of Memphis Rugs.
Easy to Use
Items in the Nordic style are designed to not only look good but feel good, hold the right amount, open and close easily, etc. They tend to feature no unnecessary elements. For instance, a luxury lamp like our Lola Table Lamp will just do its job and do it well.
Easy to Maintain
The simplicity inherent in Scandi style lends itself to easy cleaning. Lack of clutter, sturdy items, flat surfaces, etc.
Long Lasting
When your interior design is focused on practical, attractive items of high quality – we’ve mentioned wooden furniture, wool rugs and luxury lamps – then it follows that these are going to last far longer than cheap plastic junk.
Keeps Rooms Light & Bright
The muted colours of a Scandi-style décor, coupled with the use of minimal furnishings and their (often) lower profiles, allows maximum light into a room. This in turn adds to the feeling of cosiness noted in our second point. Lighter coloured wooden floors are also preferred, which can assist by “bouncing” light around the space.
Makes Rooms Seem Bigger
This point connects to our previous one. The illusion of spaciousness observed with Nordic style is partly due to the bountiful light and partly the fine lines of the wooden furniture, etc.
Can Work with Other Styles
Back in the intro, we used the words “understated beauty” to describe Scandinavian-style interior design, and this understatedness means you can add the odd touch of another sort of décor without an obvious clash – maybe a framed print with a bit more colour or a funky ornament or a favourite gadget.
